8th & Filbert Streets Garage

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Client: Philadelphia Parking Authority
Architect: WRT

O’Donnell & Naccarato provided structural engineering services to repair, modernize, and beautify the 6-story, 1,200-space parking garage, as well as 30,000 SF of ground-level retail space. The 1960’s era facility, often called the “Gateway to Center City”, is located in the Market East neighborhood, between Independence Mall and the Philadelphia Convention Center.

Improvements included repairs throughout the garage, and more noticeably, significant aesthetic renovations to dramatically alter the building’s exterior appearance. On the North facing elevation, screening with colored glass louvers that shimmer and reflect light add visual interest while helping to obscure the decks. The South facing elevation features similarly folded metal mesh scrim. Where the garage spans over 8th street, the existing retail space and sidewalk have been completely renovated and brightened with an overhead LED lighting installation.
