Holy Ghost Prep Firebird Activity Center

Location: Bensalem, PA
Architect: McGillin Architecture
General Contractor: McDonald Building Company

O’Donnell & Naccarato is providing ongoing structural engineering services for the adaptive reuse of an existing beverage distribution building to create a 25,000 SF multi-purpose student activity center. The renovated facility will house a gymnasium and indoor athletic spaces, as well as performance, rehearsal, and storage areas to support HGP’s music and theatrical departments.

In order to create open space for the new gym, two existing columns were removed, which necessitated the installation of a long-span steel transfer beam supported by new columns at either end. The transfer beam, depicted in the adjacent photo, is 36 inches-deep by 60 feet-long and weighs over 10,000 lbs. O&N’s role also included design of four single-story additions, two entrance canopies, multiple wall openings and related reinforcement, partial demolition and reframing of the second floor, and structural analysis and reinforcement to accommodate multiple new RTU's.

O&N President Anthony Naccarato, PE, SECB is an active Holy Ghost Prep alumnus (Class of 1984) currently serving as Building Committee Chair on HGP's Board of Trustees.
