McLaren Health Proton Therapy Center

Location: Flint, MI
Architect: RTKL & SmithGroup joint venture

O'Donnell & Naccarato provided structural engineering services for Great Lakes Cancer Institute’s newest facility, McLaren Health Proton Therapy Center. The structure houses several proton therapy vaults as well as clinical space. O’Donnell & Naccarato implemented an innovative design for the vault lids that allowed for the 5'-thick structures to be constructed without the use of shoring down to the floor slab 40' below. The highly sensitive cancer treatment equipment was hung from a series of 5' wide by 15' deep concrete beams designed to deflect a maximum of ¼ of a millimeter. The higher density concrete mixes were closely monitored to reduce the heat of hydration and to prevent thermal shock cracking while concrete pours were conducted during winter months.
