Social Security Administration Building

Location: Woodlawn, MD
Architect: Stantec Architecture, Inc.

O'Donnell & Naccarato provided structural engineering services for the renovation of the 5-story, 1,200,000 SF structure to create a user-friendly office environment with appropriate amenities, and to develop an organizational logic for the building with an image suitable for the Social Security Administration’s mission of service to the public. During renovation, the entire skin of the building was removed and the structure was retrofit to support a new precast concrete skin. To introduce natural light into the center of the massive building, hundreds of linear feet of skylight were installed after the concrete flat plate roof and large sections of each floor were cut and removed to create a light well.
