Urban Outfitters Corporate Headquarters

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Architect: Meyer Scherer & Rockcastle, Ltd.

The Navy Yard in Philadelphia, PA was the birthplace of the American Navy with its roots stretching back to 1776. The Yard operated as a naval base up until 1996, and has since found a second life as an industrial park, research center, and tree-lined corporate campus, which boasts an impressive and architecturally diverse range of 19th and 20th century structures.

O'Donnell & Naccarato provided structural engineering services for the renovation of three former manufacturing facilities (Buildings 14, 18 & 25) to create 250,000 SF of new office space for Urban Outfitters' world headquarters. All three structures were built in a similar style with masonry bearing walls, structural steel framing, and wood decking and roofing.

Building 18's existing structure was comprised of three distinct structures built in 1908, 1940, and 1942 that housed boiler, blacksmith, and machine shops. The renovation included the original “cruciform” structure and southern extension, while the remaining third structure at the southwest corner was demolished.

Building 25, built in 1904, was originally a plumber's shop. The renovation included the design of a new independent mezzanine to support office space and mechanical equipment.
