McLaren Health Proton Therapy Center

Flint, MI

O’Donnell & Naccarato provided structural design of the specialized cancer treatment center, which houses several proton therapy vaults and clinical space. An innovative design was implemented for the vault lids to allow for the 5-foot thick structures to be constructed without the use of shoring down to the floor slab located 40 feet below. The highly sensitive treatment equipment was hung from a series of 5-foot wide by 15-foot deep concrete beams designed to deflect a maximum of one quarter of a millimeter. The high density concrete mixes were closely monitored to reduce the heat of hydration and to prevent thermal shock cracking while concrete pours were conducted during winter months.
