New Jersey Institute of Technology Maple Hall Residence

Newark, NJ

NJIT’s 8-story, 500 bed apartment-style student residence is located on the former site of the Warren School. The residence was thoughtfully designed to fit the existing built fabric of the NJIT campus, and is largely comprised of single-occupancy rooms, though offers some with double-occupancy.

Built entirely above a one-story parking garage, the hall’s 1st story houses parking, retail and office space as well as the lobby entrance to the residences.  The 2nd story offers an amenity courtyard, built on the garage roof structure. Student-friendly amenities include bicycle storage, a game room, creative and lounge spaces, indoor and outdoor cafés and a spacious grass courtyard.

Sustainable-minded construction methods included offsite pre-casting of concrete, low-flow water systems and the use of paints and finishes made from low-volatile organic compounds.

The New Jersey Alliance for Action presented NJIT with a “New Jersey’s Leading Capital Construction Projects” award for the prestigious project.
