The Strawbridge's Building

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Renovation Architect: Blackney-Hayes Architects

O'Donnell & Naccarato provided structural engineering services for the renovation and fit-out of the historic Strawbridge's Building on 8th & Market Streets in Philadelphia. The limestone Beaux Arts-style department store, which now serves as the East anchor for the Gallery, an urban, partially underground shopping mall, was designed in 1928 by architects Simon & Simon as Strawbridge & Clothiers flagship store.

Structural design for various floor infill areas including the existing 9th floor auditorium/theater, the 12th floor atrium and multiple escalator banks and stairs were designed. Floor capacity analysis, miscellaneous demolitions and repair areas, verification of seismic code compliance for GSA tenant occupancy, design of support for new high density filing and mechanical equipment, and full as-built documentation were supplied as part of the renovation.
